Fraser Island Pictures
FraserIsland is the world's largest sand island. It is World Heritage Listed and has become an eco tourism venue now that its timber and sand mining industries have been abandoned. FraserIsland attained its World Heritage Listing in December 1992 in recognition of the island's exceptional sand dune systems, its rainforests on sand, and its beautiful freshwater lakes. The separation from the mainland and domesticated dogs has resulted in the dingoes of FraserIsland remaining as pure as any. Dingos are Australia's wild dog, thought to have been brought from Asia by visiting boats, or perhaps with the Aborigines. Dingos have a call resembling a howl or yelp rather than a bark. Visitors are advised not to encourage or feed the dingoes, as they have been known to attack humans. As many as 20 people have been attacked on the island in the past six years. A visiting nine year old schoolboy was tragically killed and his little brother mauled in an attack by dingos near Waddy Point on April 30th, 2001. Many dingoes were shot by authorities following the incident, and warnings to tourists upgraded to include keeping children in the company of adults at all times.

In Memory of Steve Irwin
The whole of Australia is in mourning due to the death of the Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin. I'm sure this news will reach Canada on Monday as it is now 8am back home. It was an absolute freak accident with a Sting Ray of all animals. Truly a sad day for the Aussies. Over here he has about the same status as Gretzky does in Canada.

The Currumbin Wildlife Centre
Just down the road from us is the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. Check out the photos that we took by following the Currumbin link on the left. The cool thing about this place was its hands on style. Outside of the dangerous animals we were able to pet and feed most of them. We were even able to go inside the huge cages that contained the birds.

Dave's Toys
Some people may be wondering what Dave is doing with all of his free time in the Land Down Under. Well, I've been surfing & biking during the week to fill my days. I picked up a sweet used full suspension rig with 5 inches front and back. The bike is in immaculate condition for an '04 and rides real nice. The trails are anywhere from 15 to 30 kms outside of Surfers so that means long 4 to 5 hour rides. There are lots of hills to climb and some good single track. Not the best in the world but it will do. I've taken one surf lesson and was able to get up several times on small beginner waves. Kinda like a blue or green ski run. Black diamonds will come in due course. Alison's boss was kind enough to lend me one of his surf boards so I can go out whenever and practice. Check the pics below. .

Hello All
Well, we have both arrived safe and sound. Alison is already in her fifth week of work and time is flying. We have both had one surf lesson and Alison was able to borrow a surf board from her boss for the remainder of our stay. That'll save some bucks and allow us to practice. Check back frequently for updates and photos. Use the links to the left to link to pages on the places we have been and things we have done so far. See you all soon.
